Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced his hopes of creating a data platform, and his first offerings include SQL Server 2014, Analytics Platform System, and Azure Intelligent Systems Service. SQL Server 2014 was launched last Tuesday, a tool with notable features like in-memory processing and Azure connectivity.
“Every aspect of Microsoft’s business has been fundamentally transformed because of data,” Nadella said at a presentation in San Francisco last week. “To be able to truly benefit from this platform, you need to have a data culture inside of your organization.”
This week’s roundup is about the continuing struggle of who will end up as everyone’s favorite provider of a data analytics tool.
- Microsoft’s New Data Platform Spans Office, Azure, & SQL at VentureBeat: “SQL Server 2014, which launched today, is the latest product from Microsoft’s $5 billion relational-database management division. The big innovation with the 2014 version, said Nadella, is that in-memory technology works across all data workloads, accelerating workload throughput.”
- Microsoft: Let Us Be Your One Stop for Big Data Analytics at InfoWorld: “Microsoft was linking SQL Server and Hadoop back in 2011, added connectivity for SQL Server with the Azure-hosted version of Hadoop in 2012, and expanded the ingestion, storage, and processing capacity of Azure along the way. But with Monday’s presentation, Microsoft clarified how it all ties together.”
- Microsoft CEO Nadella Unveils Data-Analysis Tools at Bloomberg: “The company has been rolling out products for corporate clients that are seeking to manage Web-linked devices and crunch the information they generate. Nadella, who took the top job in February after leading the cloud and enterprise group, is working to remake Microsoft for an era where mobile gadgets have become central, corporations run software from remote servers and household electronics get more connected.”
- Microsoft Launches Toolset for Capturing ‘Ambient Intelligence’ at ComputerWorld: “Nadella defined ambient intelligence as the data that is generated by both a growing number of machines such as sensors as well as by people who capture experiences with their digital devices.”
- Microsoft Delivers Data Platform for the Era of Ambient Intelligence at The Wall Street Journal: “These new solutions build on 12 months of innovation — including Power BI for Office 365, a cloud-based, self-service business intelligence solution with groundbreaking natural language capability; Azure HDInsight for elastic Hadoop in the cloud; PolyBase to bring structured and unstructured data together in a data warehouse appliance; and Power Query for Excel, which makes it easier for people to discover data — to deliver the most comprehensive data platform with real-time performance built into everything.”
