For anyone who’s not yet familiar with Hadoop, it’s an open-source software platform that allows organizations to store and manage large data sets. Hadoop is well-known in the data analytics software world, but it takes plenty of IT help to get the most out of it.
A startup called Platfora is working to change that and this week raised $38 million to continue making a product that will work on top of Hadoop to allow people to analyze data without IT assistance. This week’s news roundup brings you news on Platfora analytics software and the startup’s latest found of funding.
- Platfora Raises $38M to Make Big Data Accessible to Businesses at The Wall Street Journal: “One of the biggest drivers of the recent Big Data movement is Hadoop, the open source software named after a toy elephant and the target of hundreds of millions of dollars in funding. Data analytics and tools companies have also made bets on Hadoop, and one of them, Platfora Inc., has raised another $38 million, taking its total funding to $65 million.”
- Big Data Analytics Company Platfora Raises $38M at TechCrunch: “Platfora works with existing Hadoop clusters, including Cloudera, MapR, and Amazon EMR, among others, and automatically turns these huge amounts of data into dimensional and predictive dashboards, reports and insights. The company’s server architecture enables sub-second report delivery, analytics overlay, and drill down performance.”
- Big Data Analytics Firm Platfora Raises $38M to Help Enterprises Make Better Decisions at VentureBeat: “Companies that can help anyone, no matter their expertise, dive into their business intelligence are in hot demand at the moment. The big data market is expected to surpass $16 billion this year, according to IDC, and analytics will make up a large portion of that figure. Platfora’s competitors include other big data analytics companies like Workday and Teradata.”
- Platfora, a Big Data Analytics Company, Raises $38 Million at Fortune: “With the new funds, Werther says he’ll be investing across all areas of Platfora’s business: Talent, technology, product, sales. The company’s analytics platform is offered as a subscription service on premises or in the cloud, and its customers include Comcast (CMCSA), Disney (DIS), Edmunds.com, The Washington Post, Citi (C), and Vivint.”
- Hadoop Analytics Startup Platfora Raises $38M at Gigaom: “Platfora is often compared with Tableau because of its visualization capabilities — and perhaps because Tableau often is cited as the de facto front end for running business analyses on Hadoop data — but they’re actually much different. Whereas Tableau and most other business intelligence products can connect to data stored in Hadoop, Platfora runs on top of Hadoop.”
